Earning over £30k per year really worth it in this country?

Why is it that when you work hard in this country you get penalised for everything? My baby is going to nursery at 9 months as the mother has to go back to work, but because we both choose to work and earn more than £30k combined our nursery fee is going to cost us about £1100 per month.
